About me

I was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England in 1956 and spent my early years in Edenbridge, a nearby village. I went to the University of Manchester and read Politics and Modern History.

For a few years I worked as an advertising salesman on newspapers and magazines around Fleet Street and although pretty good at that sort of thing, it wasn’t the me I had in mind, so I went to Siena, Italy, where I taught English as a foreign language.

Painting

On my return to the UK in 1986 I took up painting. A year later I held my first solo show in London and since then I’ve been making art full-time. In 1994 I commenced work on the first of my themed series of paintings – Bible Paintings. This was followed by four other series: The Story of the Ancient Lovers, The Village Series, Devils and Flowers and The Revelation Series.

In 2011 I created the Art as a Derivative (AaaD) concept – art that utilises text to explore and question the world of finance. To date there have been six completed series addressing themes such as the hedge fund sector, family offices and the Great Financial Crisis. Series six – This is Private Equity! – was exhibited at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School in 2023.

Writing

I have also written about art, contributing a series of essays to Thames & Hudson’s flagship art anthology Art the Whole Story and Dorling Kindersley’s Art: A Definitive Visual Guide. I have particularly relished the opportunity to have also written art history and history for children.

Fiction: Over the years I have contributed a number of short stories – both original works and adaptions of classic folktales for children’s publishing projects.

Financial Paintings for Parent and Child

I am currently working on this seventh Art as a Derivative series that brings together painting and storytelling and will comprise twenty-one artworks. This series will be completed in Autumn 2024. I would particularly like to exhibit this work in a commercial gallery, business school, or corporate space in New York, so please do contact me if you are interested.

I live and work in Hackney, London.
